Hi folks.

Hi all. I've got a PB Legend 610 486 SX-25. This appears to be the same board that LGR has had nothing but trouble with - five machines, all dead according to one of his tweets.

Well, mine worked fine for 15 years straight, until recently when the NiCad battery began to leak. I swapped it out with a NiMH battery of the same voltage and fit. The machine worked well for a few months, until it very recently began showing a 'fixed disk controller failure' on boot. I've tried several different drives with the board, and all of them produce this error message regardless of the disk geometry (C/H/S) settings in BIOS.

I ordered a replacement board from eBay. The replacement (PB400 SX-20) arrived with battery leakage corrosion, which I cleaned up. It has exactly the same disk controller failure as my original board. What are the chances that both boards would suffer from exactly the same failure?

Can anyone give me some troubleshooting ideas on narrowing down what's causing the hard drive controller failure?

FWIW, I've tried the 'failed' drive on another machine - a Pentium 100 - and it works absolutely fine. I'm assuming that the 'controller failure' is a more general error message that signals some kind of data/signal corruption in the IDE bus.

I'd hate to give up on these boards - they've got a lot of nice onboard features, and a slim case design.
