Help please. I replaced an old printer with another, and now get an error message on start up. This is because when the PC tries to load Avast free, it cannot because of the missing comctl32.dll - but it's worse than that since I cannot load any new programs or run many of the existing ones. Should they run (Malwarebytes for example) they act strange like saying that the definition base is corrupted - do you want to download a new one?
Solutions tried and failed include:
- that the dll file wasn't deleted by error & put in the wastebasket
- Checked for spyware with MBAM (at least this worked) - ok
- System Restore only shows 2 restore points & neither will run
- sfc scannow shows everything as ok - no repair required
- chkdsk did repair some corrupt files, but not the one highlighted
- Have no Win 7 DVD's so cannot do a Start up Repair or a Clean Install (purchased the PC as reconditioned (never again)
- Tried re-registering the 'missing' dll because it's still in both Sytem 32 (64 bit) and SysWOW64 (32 bit) ((still don't understand the back-to-front naming)) - but it won't work
So unless someone out there can help me, the PC is heading for the scrap heap.
